Complety free Anti-Virus/Firewall/Anti-Spyware Software for WinXP

Wednesday, October 31st, 2007

Recently I had the misfortune of installing Norton 360.

It was supposed to provide an all in one Antivirus, Antispyware , firewall solution and retails at $80. I installed it on a beast of a machine, plenty of memory, processor power exceeding stated requirements but Norton 360 managed to slow it down to a crawl rendering WinXP virtually unusable for up to 5 minutes after boot up and intermittently thereafter. I think it safe to say that up to that point we had not experienced a virus attack or security breach that caused as much chaos!

And ironically after installing Norton 360 the machine was promptly infected with the Netsky virus.

Thanks a bunch Norton!! What happened to that company?

Anyway bye bye Norton 360.

Why pay money for such shoddy software when you can get the most important elements free?

Try the following:

For your Antivirus software, download and install AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition.

For your firewall software, download and install ZoneAlarm® Free Firewall.

Lastly to handle Spyware download and install the Ad-Aware 2007 Free

I have used these for some time, they work great AND and work with WinXP, not against it. Are you listening Norton?

Nokia N95 buggy browser, hard reset

Monday, October 1st, 2007

Got an error while attempting to use the web browser on the Nokia N95.

“Web : unable to complete operation”

It only occurred on webpages with server side scripting, like login pages etc.

The only way I could get past this error was a hardware reset of the phone.

“Turn off the mobile device. Then press and hold “3?, the “Green button” and “*” - Turn on and keep holding the keys untill the mobile phone restarts and prompts you to enter details.”

Thanks to Abdul Aziz for reset commands.

Be warned though, a hardware reset will delete all your files on the mobile, your SMS messages, your saved preferences and any applications you’ve added fortunately. So use as a last resort.

Blog Rush is coming!

Friday, September 21st, 2007

I’ve signed up with BlogRush lured by the potential of exponential traffic increase. The idea is you put the blogrush script onto your blog,(scroll down to the left hand side to see mine). Post sfrom blogs similar to yours appear in the list and posts for your blog will appear in blogrush boxes on other blogs.

The neat thing is if some one out there signs up to blogrush from the box below, my post will be promoted on their blogrush box. And if someone else signs up from that persons blogrush, my posts will be promoted on their blog too. And if another person signs up from that person who signed up from the person……
You get the idea.

Check to the video on the BlogRush page for further explanation ( i.e. better explanation)

Scribe fire update required

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

A quick note to those users who use ScribeFire extension (formally know as Performancing for Firefox) and the Firefox browser. There appears to be a problem with the second last update. So if you find ScribeFire running amok. Update the Firefox extension.

That’ll sort it.

Digital Music revolution? Where?

Wednesday, August 8th, 2007

I heard a brilliant song on the radio the other day. I’ve got the artist name, Alison Brown, the track name Pirate Queen and the album name Stolen Moments.

Now I want to download the album. I know I could install iTunes and I might find the album through that. As for other services, a quick google search returned a smattering of music download sites but they unfortunately didn’t have the album available.

But there must be more options other than Apple’s iTunes for purchasing and downloading albums. Right?

If you know of a quality website for purchasing music please let me know.

As an after thought. A company called Hash 6 who whom we share the same building offer a service whereby upon having heard the song on the radio, you could text the radio station and the song would be saved for you to purchase and download at a later stage.

Now that would have been handy.

Yahoo is down?

Monday, August 6th, 2007

EDITED: No. False alarm. I can browse to Yahoo now. Google is also serving me google.ie now as it should.

Can anyone get Yahoo.com? Can’t browse to it.

I get “The connection has timed out”
It appears down to me.

and Google.com is still sending me to the german google.de.

Are the standards slipping?

On the other hand it could be some issues with the Eircom DNS.

Thursday, February 22nd, 2007

Does anyone know of a retailer that supplies network cables in a range of colours?

That is red, blue, black, orange, white, purple and yellow?

Orange, white and purple are proving difficult to locate.
